Tao is Everywhere … In Our Young Heart（道是無所不在 … 在我们年青的心靈）

-Hur Ting Chia Tao is all around us. Tao is all around us. Although you can’t see it, you can almost sense it is there. Everything in the world revolves around a set of rules, laws - The Laws of Nature. That is what Tao is all about.  Tao is in everything. It is also in our heart. Tao is also the ability to act righteously. Sometimes we may be acting through Tao without even knowing it. Compassion, Caring, Generosity, all these traits are part of Tao.  There are many ways humans express Tao … like caring for one another or being able to give easily helping. These are all things that make the human nature a happier nature. Although we don’t see it often, the human heart is actually of a very kind and good hearted nature. We may not see this often in some people, but in times of need, in times of desperation, the light or Tao inside the human heart will show itself. A long time ago, when I was still small, there was once an incident where I just, I guess, showed my Tao, my good heart. If I remember correctly, it was I think when my mum, my little baby brother ‘Hur Fong’ and I at age of about two; were walking home. I think we were just finishing up the shopping, and walking with the pram, I was walking beside my mum and my little brother was sitting inside the pram. It was a short walk I think, but somehow the pram fell over. As the pram fell my baby brother tumbled out onto the road, and for some strange reason, I jumped out instantly onto the road, and hugged him closely in protecting him, shouting out to my mum that he had fallen out. So there I was, absolutely crapping myself, holding onto him for dear life and going off at the top of my lungs about how my brother was in danger. To be honest, I still can’t remember why I did that so instinctively. I didn’t have any second thoughts, in fact, I don’t even remember thinking about it, and I just did it. I think that was my Tao and kindness at work. Without thinking about my safety, I jumped ahead, only thinking about his wellbeing.  I guess the point I’m trying to make is that, Tao is all around us. It is also naturally inside our hearts, we don’t have to know that there is Tao to be able to be a person that is one with Tao. To be able to live a righteous happy life, one does not have to learn HOW to live a happy life. Tao will naturally guide us there. For example: there are moments in human history when great kindness was shown by many people. Not to mention great co-operation and incredible generosity, but those times only appear when the population as a whole is threatened or are acting out of desperation. Usually a great darkness befalls the people before the victims begin to show their Tao.  America, during World War 2 was one of the friendliest places during that time. Thing is, the Americans realized a war is something serious, so every American tried to help out in every way they could. People became friendly towards each other, not much internal conflict started, and women were even asked to start working in the factories. Everyone was helping because they knew it would aid in the major problem that threatened their lives at the time - the war. Even after the war ended, life was still very good, and everyone was still very friendly towards each other. So the goodness in our heart, our Tao will present ourself in times of great need. Tao is in everyone, be it a good or bad person, there will always be that small bit of light and goodness inside their hearts.  A very good example of this is with the film Star Wars. We all know Darth Vader, the man that turned to the dark side because of self-problems, because he was scared to lose. The man that made an enemy of his own son caused his own son to hate him from the beginning, the iconic villain of the famous sci-fi franchise. Many people did not like Darth Vader. He was the bad guy, the one everyone wanted to see defeated. It was thought that Darth Vader had lost all goodness in his heart when he turned to the dark side. But, his Son, Luke Skywalker, knew there was still a light inside his father. At first, Luke tried persuasion, which failed and led to him fighting his own father. In the end out of desperation, Luke cut of his father’s robotic arm. When prompted by the Dark Lord to join the dark side, Luke refused and was attacked by the dark lord himself. Luke was easily overwhelmed and ended up being hit constantly by lightning from the Dark Lord. Luke knew he was done for but still pleaded with his father to save him. His father, at the last moment out of rage, realized and let the goodness inside him flow out again, walked up to the Dark Lord, picked him up and threw him to his doom, saving his son. After that Darth Vader A.K.A Anakin, requested that Luke take of his helmet let him see his own son with his own eyes. After that Darth Vader dies, while his Son lives. Once again, out of desperation, the goodness of the heart is shown again. Everyone has goodness inside themselves. It’s just…how often is it shown? Tao has taught me how to be able to show it constantly, which helps not only other people, but me as well. The Americans knew that if they didn’t help, they would have lost the war and America would be very much different today. The people of America helped in every way they could in hopes of protecting their way of life. Darth Vader, although a bad man, still showed his own Tao, by not forgetting the duties of a father, to sacrifice his own for the better future of his Son’s, and me, basically the same way, protecting my brother, at the cost of my own. Tao is present everywhere. It is present in objects, animals, movie characters, even you and me. It is every where. 譯文 道就在我們身邊。 道就在我們身邊。雖然你不能看到它，但你幾乎可以感覺到它的存在。世上萬物的運行都是遵循上天的定理或是自然法則在運轉，這就是道啊！ 世上萬事萬物都有道。在我們的心中也有道。道會讓我們做出向善的行為。有時候在我們不知道的時候也會自然流露出來。對人慈悲，體貼，慷慨，這些善行都是道的一部分。 人們表達善行或是道的方法有很多種…比如當有需要的時候，彼此能夠給予照顧或幫忙，這些善行善為，可以幫助人們回到無始自然清淨本源的本質；雖然我們不經常看到它，但是人的本心其實有個非常善良的良知。從外表上可能看不出來，但在需要的時候、在絕望的時候，每個人的道心都會因事因地因此而顯現。 很久很久以前，當我還小的時候，一個小事故的發生讓我的道顯現了出來。如果我沒記錯的話，當時媽媽和剛出生的小弟和峰還有兩歲的我，走在買完東西回家的路上，媽媽推著載著小弟的嬰兒車，而我走在媽媽的身旁。雖然只是短短的一段路，但不知什麼原因，嬰兒車突然倒向一旁，小弟霎那間從娃娃車跌了出來掉在路上，在不知其然的狀況下，我瞬間跳到路上緊緊地把弟弟抱載懷中保護他，同時大聲的喊叫媽媽，告訴她弟弟跌了出來。當時的我雖然也是十分害怕，但我還是緊緊的抱住弟弟，並且用盡肺部所有的力量大聲的呼喊求救。說實話，至今我還不曉得為何當時年紀這麼小的我會知道這樣做，我當時並沒有任何其他的想法，事實上，我甚至不記得我有任何的想法，我就只是做了。我認為這是我內心的道和良知在作用，我並沒有考慮道自己的安全，我在第一時間跳下來，只是純粹考慮到弟弟的安全。 我想，我要點出的就是－道就在我們身邊、道就在我們的心中，只是我們不知道而已。一個人如果想要追求一個正直快樂的人生，他不需要往外尋求方法，只要將心中的道自然流露出來，祂就會引導我們走向正直快樂的人生。 舉例來說，在人類的歷史上，可以在某些時間點找出人們發出大愛的時刻，中間包含了人與人之間不分你我的互相合作和互相關懷的片段。但這些時刻只有在人類受到威脅時，或是出現絕望時才有的行為，通常是一個浩大的災難降臨時，受劫者才會開始會展現自己的道。 在第二次世界大戰期間，美國可以算是最友善的地方之一。當所有的美國人意識到這場戰爭的嚴重性後，每一個美國人都試圖在盡他們所能來互相幫忙，人與人之間變得比較友善，沒有太大的內部衝突，婦女們也開始在工廠裡幫忙。每個人都熱心參與，因為他們知道只有大家一起團結合作才可以度過眼前最大甚至會危害到自己生命的大災難--戰爭。即使在戰爭結束後的一段時期，彼此之間還是很友好。因此，我們的心是善良的，在非常時期，我們的道就會顯現出來。 道是人皆有之，無論是好人或壞人，心裡總是會有一盞心燈，不論燈是大或小，那就是他們的良知。 再舉一例。美國電影“星際大戰”中，我們都知道黑暗武士- 達斯•維德，因為一些自我問題和害怕失去的心理，選擇轉向黑暗的一面，這也造成他的兒子-路克•天行者，從電影的一開始就是他的敵人，因為每個人都希望壞人被擊敗。眾人認為當達斯•維德的內心轉向黑暗時，就失去了所有的良知，但是他的兒子路克•天行者，知道他父親的心裡還是有一盞小小的明燈亮著。起初，路克試圖勸說他的父親向善。但是勸說並沒有成功，於是雙方就打了起來，在最後的結局裡，路克砍斷了他父親的機械手臂，此時黑暗帝國的黑暗皇帝知道只要路克殺死父親達斯•維德， 路克也會陷入黑暗一面，所以就不斷鼓動路克的意志，但路克最終還是不受皇帝的誘惑，選擇放過達斯•維德，最後引發了皇帝對路克的殺意。但達斯•維德心裡的良心也因路克的痛苦而被喚醒，為了拯救兒子，達斯•維德抱著同歸於盡的決心，承受著皇帝的電擊把他從高塔拋下。達斯•維德的真面目- 安納金•天行者終於脫離黑暗面，他最後要求他的兒子路克將他的頭盔取下，讓他可以親眼看到自己的兒子，最後他死了，而他的兒子則活了下來。 此例我們可以再看到，通常處於絕望的狀態下，善心就會顯現。每個人的內心都俱有一個良知，只是多久才會顯露呢？所以我們要修道，道會教導我們如何讓自己內心的良知能時時刻刻的顯露，能夠二六時中顯露自己的良知，不僅有利於其他人，對自己也有很大的幫助。美國人知道，如果不是每個人都能無私的付出，他們可能就會輸掉這場決定生死的戰役，那今天的美國可能就會完全不一樣了。每個人都盡可能的做出貢獻來保護自己的國家和美麗的家園。黑暗武士達斯•維德，雖然是個壞人，最後仍是示現了他自己的道，不忘一個作為父親的職責，犧牲自己的生命以換取兒子的性命。而我，也是一樣的，不顧自身的安危來保護我的小弟。所以，道是無處不在，可以在世上的所有物中彰顯，在你我他之間流動，即便是一場電影，祂也是無所不在。 By九達文德長老院 皓彰組 澳洲單位   謝和頲 - Hur Ting Chia （1996年次） 譯：洪德皇（美國單位）
